The short answer

The average American spends 5 hours 16 minutes on their phone per day in 2026. Globally the average is closer to 6h 40min across all screens. US numbers have grown roughly 25 percent since 2020, mostly driven by short-form video. TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and X/Twitter account for over 60 percent of daily mobile screen time. There is no clinically validated "too much" cutoff for adults; the relevant question is whether use is interfering with sleep, work, or relationships.

Daily averages: US, global, and by age

  • 5h 16min. Average daily phone use in the US, 2026 (Reviews.org).
  • 6h 40min. Average global daily screen time across all devices (DataReportal Digital 2026 report).

The bracket worth attention is the heaviest 10 percent. At 9h 11min daily, this cohort spends more time on their phone than at work. They are the audience for hard commitment devices like ScreenFine. Soft friction tools have been tried and have failed.

Where the time goes

Top apps by daily minutes per active user (US, 2026):

  • TikTok: 95 minutes per day per active user.
  • YouTube: 78 minutes per day per active user.
  • Instagram: 62 minutes per day (including Reels).
  • Facebook: 33 minutes per day.
  • X / Twitter: 31 minutes per day.
  • Snapchat: 30 minutes per day per active user.
  • Reddit: 25 minutes per day per active user.
  • News apps combined: 18 minutes per day.

Short-form video (TikTok, Reels, Shorts) accounts for 47 percent of total US mobile entertainment time as of Q1 2026. That figure was 18 percent in 2020.

The sticky pattern is that the top three apps. TikTok, YouTube, Instagram. Consume more time per active user than any other category combined. If your doomscrolling reduction plan does not address those three specifically, it will not move the total.

Growth since 2020

The post-pandemic baseline did not return. Lockdown elevated daily phone use by ~40 percent in mid-2020, and most of that elevation has been retained as new normal. The shift was structural, not cyclical.

The cost in time, effort, and lost focus

  • 1,920 hours. Annual phone use for the average American. Equivalent to 80 days a year.
  • 5,200 steps. The average phone-time-equivalent in unwalked daily steps for someone who scrolls TikTok for 47 minutes (assuming a 6,500-step daily walking pace not lost to scrolling).
  • $48,000. Median US household income lost in time-equivalent productivity if phone use replaces a $25/hr second job at 4 hours daily for one year.
  • 23 minutes. Average time to refocus after a phone interruption (Mark, Gudith, Klocke 2008). At 186 daily pickups, this exceeds available focused work hours.

The cost-frame is what makes loss-aversion mechanisms work. A user reading "you spend 5 hours a day on your phone" feels nothing. A user calculating they would owe ~9,125 pushups a year at ScreenFine's rate feels the loss in advance. That is the mechanism behind commitment devices.

Screen time and mental health

  • +71 percent. Increase in suicide risk factors among US teens spending 5+ hours daily on screens vs less than 1 hour (Twenge, Joiner, Rogers, Martin 2018).
  • +27 percent. Increase in self-reported anxiety symptoms among US adults in the heaviest phone-use quintile (Pew Research, 2024).
  • -19 percent. Average sleep duration loss for users who use their phone within 30 minutes of bedtime (multiple studies, range 14-23 percent).
  • 2.4x. Increased rate of attention complaints in US workers self-reporting heavy phone use (Microsoft Work Trend Index 2025).
  • 54 percent. Proportion of US adults who report "wishing they used their phone less" but not knowing how (Pew, 2024).

The relationship is correlational, not necessarily causal. It is plausible that depression and anxiety drive heavier phone use rather than the reverse. The honest read is that for adolescents the causal evidence is stronger; for adults it is mixed but the correlations are large enough to take seriously.
