A standard day has natural cues that end the night: the room gets dark, the household winds down, the next morning looms. Shift work strips those cues away. You are decompressing at noon or 3am, alone, wired from the job, with no external signal telling you to stop. In that state the phone is the path of least resistance, and the sleep you trade for it is the sleep you could least afford to lose.
This page is not medical advice, and sleep hygiene around shift work is a real subject worth taking seriously on its own. What an app can do is remove the single easiest sleep thief at the moment your judgment is weakest. Reminder banners and soft limits do not, because the override is one tap and costs nothing. The mechanism has to refuse the cheap override.
You set a daily limit and the apps it covers. Cross it and those apps lock at the operating-system level, not behind a popup. Phone, Messages, and Maps stay open, so you are reachable for work and family. You earn the apps back with 1,000 steps, a workout, 10 mindful minutes, 25 pushups, or 25 squats. Going over never charges your card. The only cost is the flat dollar a week.
