RepUnlock Alternatives 2026: 6 Apps That Make You Earn Your Screen Time
RepUnlock blocks your chosen apps until you exercise, counting reps in real time through the front camera. It supports six exercises (pushups, squats, jumping jacks, sit-ups, high knees, burpees), validates your form on device, and requires iOS 17 or later.
It is genuinely good at the thing it does. But two details are worth knowing before you commit, and neither is obvious from the App Store listing.
The two catches
It does not publish a price. Nowhere on its site is there a number. There is a Premium tier, unlocked partly through referrals, but you are agreeing to an unknown cost. Every other app below tells you what it charges.
It positions itself against Apple Screen Time rather than building on it. Its own FAQ argues Apple's timers are easily bypassed, and its answer is its own exercise barrier instead. That matters more than it sounds. On iOS, the only way a block survives you force-quitting the blocking app is Apple's FamilyControls and ManagedSettings frameworks. An app that is not built on them can interrupt you, but it cannot shield an app at the system level.
If reps are what you want and you trust yourself not to route around a soft block, RepUnlock is fine. If you have already gamed three blockers, keep reading.
The alternatives, compared
| App | What triggers the lock | How you get back in | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenFine | Crossing your daily limit | 25 pushups, 25 squats, 1,000 steps, a workout, or 10 mindful minutes | $1/week |
| Habit Doom | Automatically at midnight | Complete a daily habit, photo verified | Free tier, $2.99/mo, $34.99 lifetime |
| Pushscroll | Each app open | Pose-counted reps buy minutes | Subscription |
| PushUp Time | Each app open | Camera-counted pushups, squats, sit-ups | Free tier + paid |
| StepBloc | Each app open | Steps, pushups, squats | Subscription + lifetime option |
| Strut | Each app open | Walking only, via Apple Health | Not published |
ScreenFine
The closest match if RepUnlock's model stopped working on you.
The difference is the trigger. RepUnlock charges reps every time you open an app, which turns into a toll you pay on autopilot. ScreenFine caps the whole day instead: set a daily limit, and crossing it shields your chosen apps at the OS level through Apple FamilyControls. Getting back in costs one verified action, and you have a week to clear each slip before it becomes a recorded miss.
That delay is the point. Every other app on this list sells your minutes back the second you finish the reps. That is a vending machine, and vending machines get gamed.
$1 a week after a 7-day free trial. iOS only.
Habit Doom
The best free tier here and the clearest pricing anywhere in the category: three active habits free, then $2.99 per month, $19.99 per year, or $34.99 for lifetime.
Your apps lock automatically at midnight and you earn the day back by completing a habit such as a workout, reading, or meditating, with anti-cheat photo verification. Built on the Screen Time API and FamilyControls, with a Hard Mode that cannot be bypassed.
Pick Habit Doom if you want the day gated up front. Pick ScreenFine if you want an allowance with a consequence attached.
Pushscroll
The most fitness-forward option. Pose detection across pushups, squats, lunges, jumping jacks and more, plus guided workouts and Apple Health step integration. Runs on Android as well as iOS.
Same earn-as-you-go trade-off as RepUnlock, and subscription only.
PushUp Time
The easiest free entry point to the category. Camera-counted pushups, squats and sit-ups with on-device AI, hooks into iOS Screen Time, and a usable free tier. Cross-platform.
StepBloc
Steps first, with pushups and squats as options, plus a scheduler and usage limits. The only app here with a lifetime purchase alongside subscriptions. Steps are the easiest currency to accumulate passively, so the friction is mild by design.
Strut
The simplest steps-only implementation. Walking earns minutes through Apple Health, you spend them in 15, 30 or 60-minute blocks, and the wallet resets at midnight. Blocking runs on Apple's Screen Time framework. No price published.
One app that does not belong on this list
EarnIt turns up on roundups of exercise-unlock apps constantly, sometimes at the top, described as counting pushups with the camera. That is wrong. EarnIt is a UK school revision app: a parent restricts TikTok or Instagram and the child unlocks it by completing a GCSE or A-Level quiz. Free, PIN-protected, no camera, no exercise of any kind. Good app, wrong category.
Which to pick
- Best rep counting: RepUnlock, if you accept the unpublished price and the softer lock.
- Best free tier and clearest pricing: Habit Doom.
- A limit that actually holds: ScreenFine. Hard daily cap, OS-level shield, delayed redemption.
- Most exercise variety: Pushscroll.
- Try it for nothing: PushUp Time.
The pattern worth noticing: almost everything here sells your minutes straight back the moment you finish the reps. If you have already tried an earn-as-you-go app and drifted back to the same screen time, the model is the reason, not your willpower.
All pricing and feature claims checked against each vendor's own website in August 2026.
