# How to block Twitter / X on iPhone

Five methods, ranked. Note: Twitter is now X but most users still search and think "Twitter". Both names refer to the same product and the same problems.

The short answer

The fastest X block is **Settings > Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit > Social > X > 15 min/day**. The strongest is App Limit + Screen Time passcode held by someone else + **x.com, twitter.com, and mobile.twitter.com all on Safari's Never Allow list**. The web version is fully functional including the For You algorithmic feed, so any deletion-only block fails within hours.

## Why blocking X / Twitter specifically

X's average daily session on iOS in 2026 is **36 minutes** (data.ai). The number understates the cost in a specific way: X heavily concentrates among professional users (journalists, founders, researchers) who often justify the time as "work". Some of it is. Most of it is not. The honest version: open Screen Time, look at the X total, and ask what fraction of those minutes you would defend in a one-line write-up.

The For You algorithmic tab is the surface that makes X stickier in 2026 than in 2022. It runs a similar recommendation engine to TikTok and Reels but weighted toward outrage. The cost is not the engagement itself but the emotional state X leaves you in. If you find yourself in a sour mood at the end of a 20-minute session, the algorithm worked as designed.

## Method 1: App Limit

**How:** Settings > Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit > (uncheck all) > Social > X > 15 min/day > Add.

**Strength:** 2/10 without a passcode (the web fallback is unblocked); 5/10 with one.

**When to use:** first attempt. Useful audit data even when it doesn't hold.

## Method 2: Screen Time passcode

**How:** Settings > Screen Time > Use Screen Time Passcode > 4-digit code different from unlock. Have someone else set it.

**When to use:** after Method 1 fails. Hardest part is the social ask, not the technical setup.

## Method 3: Delete the app and block the web

**How:** Hold X icon > Remove App > Delete App. Then Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Web Content > Limit Adult Websites > Never Allow > add x.com, twitter.com, mobile.twitter.com, and tweetdeck.twitter.com.

**Strength:** 5/10 with all four URLs blocked; 1/10 if you only delete the app. The web is the dominant fallback path for X.

**When to use:** 7-day experiment. If you find yourself routing through DuckDuckGo image search or a VPN to reach X, the underlying pattern needs Methods 4 or 5.

## Method 4: Content Restrictions (install + web blocked)

**How:** Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > (on) > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Installing Apps > Don't Allow. Plus the Web Content blocks from Method 3.

**When to use:** when you want X completely off your phone. Trade-off: app installs blocked globally.

## Method 5: Add a verified-exercise consequence

**How:** Set a daily limit in iOS Screen Time. Install [ScreenFine](/). X time counts toward your daily limit, and going over triggers a 25-pushup lock per 15-minute block.

**When to use:** if your X use feels "professional" but the minutes don't match. The per-block cost forces you to make the trade conscious.

## When "I use it for work" is mostly the For You feed

$1 a week. 25 pushups per 15-minute overage. Forces the question of which X minutes are actually doing work.
