For Students

# Real consequences for studying. Not another reminder you will swipe away.

Students average more daily phone time than any other adult cohort. The cost is not abstract: it is the grade, the GPA, the option on the next year of your life. ScreenFine is the structural fix that the "just put the phone down" advice does not provide.

## Why students specifically

Multiple measurement firms put 18 to 24 year old daily phone time near eight hours, with social and short-form video accounting for the largest share. That number is not the problem on its own. The problem is the shape of the cost. A working adult who scrolls for three hours at night loses sleep. A student who scrolls for three hours at night loses the thing the next twelve months of their education was supposed to produce.

Most screen-time apps were designed for the working adult. Their default tone is "find balance" or "be more mindful". That tone fails students for the same reason willpower fails students: an undergraduate brain is still finishing prefrontal development, and an undergraduate calendar has more unstructured time than any other phase of adult life. Soft reminders, ignorable banners, and dim-screen prompts collapse against that combination.

ScreenFine assumes the willpower path has already failed. Set the limit when you are calm, in week one. When you cross it during exam week at 1am, the apps lock until you complete the redemption you picked in advance. The deal was signed when the rational version of you was in charge.

## What ScreenFine does for studying

One daily limit. One list of distractor apps. The moment you go over, those apps lock. To unlock you complete a verified action: 25 camera-counted pushups, 1,000 HealthKit steps, 25 squats, or 10 timer-locked mindful minutes. You pick the redemption type at onboarding so the choice is not negotiated mid-impulse.

What you do not get: another dashboard to admire, another streak to mourn, another paywall in the way of the unlock. There is one $1 weekly subscription via Apple IAP and zero variable charges. The redemption is paid in pushups, not dollars, so a student budget is the wrong reason to skip the tool.

Phone, Messages, FaceTime, and Maps stay accessible regardless of lock state. Group projects and family contact are never the casualty of an overage. Only the apps you explicitly added to your block list (almost always TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, X, Reddit, Snapchat) are affected.

Three places it matters

## Use cases

### Exam week

You set a 45-minute daily limit two weeks before finals. The week of the exam, every overage block locks Instagram and TikTok until you do 25 pushups or walk 1,000 steps. You either study or you train. There is no third option that ends with you scrolling for an hour at midnight.

### Dissertation push

A thesis or capstone is 3 to 6 months of self-directed deep work, the exact failure mode soft limits cannot survive. ScreenFine pairs a hard daily cap with a lock list (the apps you actually lose hours to) and a redemption you can run in the hallway between writing blocks.

### Internship or first job

You finally have a manager watching your output. The 4-hour scroll habit from undergrad has to compress into 30 minutes. Set the limit on Sunday night. Pushup redemption clears the lock without a payment dialog, so the consequence stays inside the app and off your wallet.

## Common questions from students

### Does it work when the library Wi-Fi blocks certain sites?

ScreenFine uses Apple's Family Controls API, which operates at the OS level, not through a DNS filter or VPN layer. Wi-Fi restrictions on your network have no effect on how the lock works. The apps lock at the iOS level regardless of which network you are on.

### Can I whitelist apps I need for class?

Yes. Phone, Messages, and any productivity or education app stays off the block list entirely. You choose which apps get included in the lock. TikTok and Instagram can be blocked while Notion and your university portal stay fully open. The block list is yours to configure.

### What happens if I go over during an actual emergency?

The honor button is always available as a manual redemption. It clears the lock immediately. The record of the slip stays in your history, but you are never actually trapped behind the lock. The tool is a behavioral structure, not a physical cage.
